What makes a good leader?

The “Price is Right” chose Drew Carey as their new game show host to replace long time host Bob Barker.  What made Drew Carey a good choice as leader for the popular game show?

I'm guessing good looks alone did not win Carey the job, but some of his other leadership characteristics probably played a major role is securing his new position.

While most leaders have key traits that make them great, such as humor is Carey’s case, most leaders don’t reach their full potential until they are able to apply the following leadership characteristics.

1.

Maintain absolute integrity – There is no room for compromising your values when it comes to maintaining integrity. Too many potential leaders miss out on being effective because they choose to straddle the integrity fence even on the small things.

2.

Set the vision – Effective leaders set a clear vision for the other team members.  Many companies fail because the team members do not have a clear understanding of where the leader is wanting to go with the company.

3.

Be committed – Take ownership in the process. Once the vision has been set, stay committed to the cause. Do not waiver.

4.

Expect positive results – Turn disadvantages into advantages.  Practice being optimistic and encouraging to those around you.  Effective leaders create a positive atmosphere towards achieving desired results.
5.

Take care of your people – Effective leaders go to bat for their employees.  Look for ways to support and build up those you work with.  Capitalize on opportunities to build team loyalty.

6.
Put others before yourself – Don’t think more highly of yourself than you ought to.  Consider the impact that your decisions will have on others.  Treat others the way that you would like to be treated.  Practice selflessness.
7.
Ability to laugh – Take some time to enjoy life.  Incorporate some humor into your leadership routine.  Healthy laughter can help bring a team together, ease tension and show the leader in a more approachable light.

Whether the new “Price is Right” host fits into all these leadership categories is yet to be determined, but with a little work we can all learn to practice these leadership skills in our own business environments.
