Step Into the Circle: Choosing Courage Over Comfort
At a recent team meeting, our staff watched a talk by Bradley Rapier called Step In the Circle. Drawing from his experience in hip-hop dance culture—from Hollywood to Broadway—Rapier challenges audiences to rethink how we engage with others and how fear often keeps us on the sidelines.
His message sparked an important conversation for our team: Where are we standing at the edge of the circle instead of stepping in?
Moving Past Fear
Often, what holds us back isn’t ability—it’s fear of the unknown. We hesitate before sharing an idea, trying something new, attending an event, or starting a difficult conversation.
Sometimes the simplest way to move forward is to invite someone along with us. Courage grows when we take steps together.
Choosing Trust Over Fear
One of Rapier’s biggest challenges to his audience is to stop making decisions based on fear and start making them based on trust.
When we step into the circle—fully engaged and willing to contribute—we not only grow ourselves, we help create space for others to do the same.
Engagement has a ripple effect.
Bring Your Groove
Rapier talks about finding your “groove”—the places where your gifts, experience, and energy naturally shine.
For some people, that might mean planning events, hosting gatherings, or bringing people together. For others, it may be offering ideas, creativity, or encouragement to a team.
The goal isn’t to do everything.
It’s to bring what you have to the circle.
A Simple Challenge
Growth rarely happens from the sidelines.
So here’s the question we’re reflecting on:
Where are we standing at the edge of the circle right now?
Whether it’s a new initiative, a conversation we’ve been avoiding, or an opportunity that feels uncomfortable, sometimes growth begins with a simple step forward.
And when one person steps in, it often gives others the courage to do the same.
