At a recent team meeting, our staff watched a talk by Dr. Henry Cloud called Building Real Connections. His message centered on a simple but powerful truth: we are fueled by relationships.

This led us to reflect on an important question: Which relationships in our lives are energizing us—and which ones are draining us?

The Power of Connection
We discussed how some relationships inspire us to grow, encourage us, and bring out our best. Others, often marked by negativity or constant criticism, can leave us feeling drained.

Dr. Cloud describes real connection as a space where people can truly be themselves—where strengths and weaknesses are both welcomed. It’s not about toxic environments or surface-level positivity, but honest, supportive relationships that help people grow.

Building Authentic Relationships
A key part of creating real connection is how we show up for others. We talked about the importance of being patient in conversations, listening well, and giving people space to share openly.

Simple actions—like slowing down, asking thoughtful questions, and allowing genuine emotion—can foster deeper, more meaningful relationships.

At the same time, we reflected on how leaders can unintentionally discourage connection through behaviors like being overly critical, dismissive, or not fully present. These actions can shut people down rather than invite them in.

Being Intentional
We also discussed the importance of being selective and intentional about the relationships we invest in. The people we surround ourselves with influence our mindset, energy, and growth.

A Simple Challenge
Strong relationships don’t happen by accident—they’re built with intention.

So here’s the question we’re reflecting on:

What is one step we can take this week to build a deeper, more authentic connection with someone?

Because when we create space for real connection, we not only grow individually—we strengthen the people and teams around us.
