The Future of Work (and My Morning Coffee) Begins with Z

There’s something poetically fitting about reading  “The Future Begins with Z: Nine Strategies to Lead Generation Z as They Disrupt the Workplace” at Zeb’s Coffeehouse in Eudora, KS — my favorite small-town coffee spot.

I couldn’t help but smile at the coincidence — learning about the generation shaping the future of work in a place that begins with the same letter. Z.

This book is more than a leadership guide, it’s a reminder that every generation brings new giftings. Gen Z is no different. They offer some incredible gifts that the world needs right now:

• Purpose with conviction — they want work that matters.

• Digital agility — they see innovation as second nature.

• Commitment to inclusion — belonging isn’t optional.

• Authenticity — they value transparency over titles.

Yes, every generation also introduces new challenges as well.  Gen Z’s desire for impact can test patience. Their need for feedback can stretch traditional norms. Their mobility can challenge managers still leading from stability.

Still, if we choose curiosity over criticism, these tensions can be where transformation begins.

Leadership today isn’t about controlling change — it’s about guiding it with humility, empathy, and trust.

If you lead, mentor, or simply want to understand the next generation — this one’s a must‑read. Because the future isn’t waiting. It’s already here… and it begins with Z.
