Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness
In recent staff meetings, our team had the opportunity to learn from Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness by Arthur C. Brooks through the Global Leadership Network.
Together, we discussed how to find greater meaning in our lives and work, what true happiness looks like, and how we can help the people around us find purpose, too.
In this discussion, we explored:
Finding your why: Our purpose can change and evolve over time, but faith, family, and meaningful relationships help us stay grounded in what matters most.
Happiness vs. fulfillment: Happiness is built on enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning. Success and fulfillment can go hand in hand when we share goals with like-minded people and learn to enjoy the journey rather than focusing only on the end result.
The impact of technology: Social media and constant distractions can create unrealistic expectations, encourage comparison, and pull us away from meaningful connections. Being present and content requires intentional choices about how we spend our time.
Leading with purpose: Great leaders are “happiness teachers.” They help others find meaning in their work, look beyond completing tasks, and understand how their contributions make a difference.
Loving people and using things: Leadership means investing in people, recognizing when someone is struggling, offering help, and modeling the behaviors we want to see in others.
Practical ways to put these ideas into action:
Create tech-free times, such as the first and last hour of the day, and keep phones away from the table during meals.
Consider using an alarm clock instead of a phone and a visual family calendar to reduce reliance on technology.
Enjoy the process of reaching a goal by asking bigger questions and looking for meaning along the way.
Be intentional about encouraging coworkers, helping others through challenges, and building stronger human connections.
Lead by example. We can't expect others to make changes we're not willing to make ourselves.
As a team, we're challenged to be more intentional with our time, use technology wisely, and create space for deeper reflection and connection.
The takeaway: Be present, be content, and never lose sight of your why. Meaningful leadership starts with how we live, how we treat people, and how we help others find purpose in what they do.
